Drew Baker for District 2

Hello Friends!
I'm Drew Baker & I'm running to represent District 2 on the Jackson City Council. I was born and raised in Jackson and have a deep and abiding love for my hometown. The Baker family first came to Jackson from Crockett County in 1911. My grandparents and parents were all raised here and were educated in public schools...just like me. Our family founded Baker's Drug Store in the 1930's, Baker Bros Auto Upholstery in the 1940's, and I started Baker Bros BBQ on that same block of West Main Street in 2018.
My business was born at a truly pivotal point in my life. In July of 2017 I sought treatment for an addiction to alcohol that had consumed me for a decade and took me to some profoundly dark places. I'm proud to say that I've been free from that addiction for over 9 years. It's been my life's greatest accomplishment.
I've served on the Board of Directors for The Tennessee Equality Project, Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism (JACOA), and currently serve on the Executive Committee for the Madison County Democratic Party.
I've been a fearless advocate for the LGBT community, for those affected by the disease of addiction, and for practically every other marginalized group you could think of. I believe every human being is worthy of grace and compassion. I believe that human dignity is an intrinsic, unearned value in every human being. I believe we all have a moral obligation to care for the sick, the poor, and those that simply cannot care for themselves.
I've told numerous people since deciding to seek this position that I've run my big mouth long enough....and that's it's time I get to work doing what I can to make Jackson a better place. THAT is the sum of my desires for this city that has blessed me far beyond what I could have ever dreamed of.
These aren't empty campaign promises - they are the foundation that I'm building this campaign on:
1. I will NEVER vote to raise your taxes
2. I will donate every penny of compensation I receive as your city councilman to charity
3. I will place the needs of my district, my city, & my country above my own
4. I will be engaged, accountable, responsible, available, & transparent
5. I will never consider my election to the city council a "lifetime appointment"
That last one is REALLY important. There are far too many elected officials across our country that stay far too long. They get comfortable & develop a sense of entitlement. Spending decades as a member of an elected body means nothing if you stop delivering for the people that elected you.
I'm running to change the tone in district 2. It's time for new ideas, new goals, & a fresh perspective.
I look forward to the tasks that lie ahead....to knocking on doors, to meeting as many of you as I possibly can, and to earning the privilege of serving this place that I love so much as your City Councilman.
With gratitude,
Drew Baker
